The inspiration for the Sheraton Kunming stems from the local natural landscape elements such as the ancient tea-horse road, the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces, movable-type printing artworks, Yi culture, and craftsmanship. Luo Dan has skillfully integrated these elements, showcasing the profound historical heritage of Yunnan through the hotel's design.
What sets this design apart is the use of symbols refined from the elements of the Ancient Tea-Horse Road. The interplay of color, light, marble, and metal creates a dramatic and engaging space. The design evokes a sense of time and space intertwining, producing a dreamlike fusion of image and real-time experience. This cultural inheritance gives the building its soul and warmth.
The realization of this design was achieved through a dialogue with history. Luo Dan has integrated the local famous natural landscape elements with technology, history, and culture. This approach has allowed for a deep presentation of the local customs and humanistic spirit, offering a new interpretation of traditional elements and expressing the art of life in detail.
The Sheraton Kunming boasts a construction area of 100,000 square meters, with more than 140,000 square meters of meeting and banquet venues. It includes 1,117 superior rooms, theme rooms, and various suites, equipped with swimming pools, bars, fitness centers, and Chinese and Western restaurants.
Luo Dan faced several challenges in the design process. These included the need for cultural innovation, the arrangement of space, color matching, and meeting functional requirements while enhancing the aesthetic effect of the hotel. Through careful planning and design, Luo Dan was able to overcome these challenges, resulting in a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
This design has been recognized with a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and that introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
